Great advise from m34tba11.
Atkins and low carb (anything under 75 carbs a day) are the most healthful diets in the world. The key you must remember is: IT IS NOT A DIET IT IS A LIFESTYLE WAY OF EATING.
Don't listen to the Atkins detractors, they have been brainwashed by the FDA food pyramid that says you should eat 7 to 11 servings of grains a day! No wonder we have a diabetes epidemic!
There are absolutely no essential carbs, none. Why? Because your body can make glucose from fat and protein but it can't make protein or essential fatty acides from foods. (With the exception of EPA and DHA, the fat found in Omega 3, but you need saturated fat to produce it!)
I don't really care how you do it but here are the key elements:
Restrict carbs to no more than 72 grams a day or lower. You really don't have to go below 50 after you have lost alot of weight, say 10 to 20 pounds, depending on how fat you were to begin with.
Exercize, even if its just walking 30 minutes a day 3 or 4 times a week.
Eat fresh foods, not low-carb frankenfoods. Fresh meats--with all the fat--and fresh green veggies and a little fruit.
Supplement. You must do it because our foods
have less vitamin content than they did 30 years ago.
And regarding specific supplements: CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is also very important. Our beef would have high amounts of this acid if they fed them grass, their natural diet, instead of corn. Omega 3 fish oils is also important. Yes, our meat, including chicken and eggs would have more of this if fed a natural diet. They sell free range eggs in most supermarkets.
Throw out the Mazola, canola oils and margerine. Cook in expeller expressed organic coconut oil. Much safer and very stable at medium to high heat.
Good luck, and remember, its for life. Sure you can cheat ONE day a month or maybe more, AFTER you have reached your goal.

Okay I've done both so ... First of all if you've only lost 5 lbs in one month on a vegetarian diet you probably haven't been exercising and/or you've taken in too many calories. Just because it's non carnivorous doesn't mean its low calorie. Now as for ATKINS run....don't do it. I thought I was so smart and so did all the people I convinced to go on Atkins cause I lost 29 lbs in a month, BUT... not only did the weight come right back the minute I got back to the real world and ate a few carbs. but I gained back more, plus I became a B*tch while on this diet. CRANKY!!! and it was sooooo hard to concentrate as your brain has no energy due to the lack of carbs. It's so physically unhealthy too. It was fun for the first couple of days, bacon, cheese, steaks, salmon, nuts... AKA fat fat fat fat fat fat...then you start to feel like a pan of oil. Makes me sick recalling this diet. How about adding a little lean protein to the veggie diet and exercise the weight off, then you'll have a firm toned body.

My husband started it again last week lost 11 lbs.
It really isn't a good diet to keep up. It is better to use as a quick weight loss and then you need to find something to help you maintain after you lose the weight. Atkins diet makes your body turn to ketosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis
It is hard on the kidneys.
If you do Atkins, just be very careful and don't stay on it too long.
Also, watch to not eat too many carbs just after coming off the diet. You will gain back all the weight and then some.
Maybe try South Beach..it is similar to Atkins but a bit safer.
Good Luck.

The Atkins diet does work - I've tried it, but couldn't deal with the horrible headaches and irritability I experienced a week into it. I've known people who have lost a lot of weight on it, but ultimately it has all returned as it does with many fad diets.
You're cutting out carbs and loading up on protein and fats which is going to lead to other health problems in the future; ie: high cholesterol.
Many people choose Atkins because it's a quick fix. If you can stick with it, you will lose weight. However, a more valuable act would be to educate yourself about what are the right things to eat. Learn about portions. Carbs are not bad - you need them.

Atkins is divided into 4 stages:
Stage 1 - Rapid Weight loss: 5-15 lbs per week!
Stage 2 - Adjustment: 5-10 lbs per week
Stage 3 - Stabilization: 1-5 lbs per week
Stage 4 - Commit for life: 0 per week if you stay on the diet. If you go off, all the weight comes back!!!!!!!
Atkins was designed for people that or morbidly obese and diabetic. It requires a lifelong commitment. If you have the strength to do it, more power to you, but if you only have to lose some nuisance weight, just start walking of jogging. It's much healthier.

i've lost 3-6 lbs per week, up to 20 or so a month is not unrealistic, if perhaps a little aggressive. 10-15 a month is a good target. The biggest problem is getting bored with it, there are only so many egg meat and cheese bakes you can eat and not flip out. I found a good way to survive is to get into ketosis by being VERY strict the first week and then gradually add in things like salad and the occasional Atkins produced luxury product. It makes things bearable, but be warned, if you fall off, then you bounce higher than you started out because you tend to overindulge in the things you previously forbade yourself.

I tried the South Beach (very similar to Atkins) diet for a couple of months. I lost 15 pounds in that time. 10 in the first couple of weeks. It was great, I was fitting into clothes that I hadn't been able to wear in a couple of years.
When I stopped following the diet, I gained 25 pounds. Try this diet if you want, but it really isn't a life long diet which is what you really need. Count your calories and exercise is really the best way. Right now I am doing weight watchers & working out 3 days a week.

Good Luck!

My sister did Atkins and lost 50 pounds - she's kept most of it off for 2 years now, but she bought all of their vitamins and supplements to go along with the diet.
My doctor said that they still don't know of the long-term effects of a diet so high in protein and low in fiber. He told me not to try it, because I have IBS, and have to have bran, fiber, fresh fruits and veggies, and all the GOOD stuff Atkins doesn't allow at first (you can work it into the diet after you've determined what exactly causes you to gain)
Best wishes!

All these diets are money making schemes. You need to start by doing a daily journal for one week of everything you have put in your mouth and also how you are feeling (emoptionally, physiclally, spiritually) at the time you are eating without watching what you are eating this way you are able to identify the trigger points. What I have done with all these diets is to take parts of it from each that suits my lifestyle. nOTHING BEATS A GOOD WORKOUT BY THE WAY. The best things in life are free take a look at this site. this was my saviour. 30lbs since November.
