My little sister has just burnt her arm on the stove! She's 5 years old; she tried to climb up on the stove right after I had finished cooking and her left arm looks badly burned.

I've wrapped a cool cloth around the burnt arm and I'm giving her a lot of water to drink. I'm not able to get her to the doctor until my parents get home late tonight. What else can I do for her?

The burn is on the palm side of her left arm. It's starting to blister a bit.

I've given her a dose of Children's Tylenol already.

I've got a friend on the way over here now, so I'll be able to get her to the hospital now!

I am a paramedic, so I know what I am talking about. Please listen to my advice.

If her arm is starting to blister, that means it is a pretty serious burn. You are completely correct in keeping it wrapped in a cool cloth. You also need to make sure that the wound is clean. Put her arm under the faucet and allow the cool water to run over the wound for a few minutes. Gently pat the wound dry with a soft, CLEAN cloth (a cloth, not paper towel, tissue, cotton, etc.). Apply some sort of antibiotic ointment. Bandage the wound with some sort of gauze - DO NOT USE A BANDAID. If you don't have any gauze, wrap the wound in a clean cloth. Make sure you don't wrap it too tightly - air still needs to be able to get to the wound.

If you haven't already, call your parent(s) immediately. Tell them exactly what happened and ask them to please come home. If they are unable to come home, you do need to call 911.

The paramedics can come to your house, evaluate your sister's burn, and either give her some treatment there at your house or decide to take her to the hospital.

Is the burn red, or is it blackened or blistered? If it is red, like a bad sunburn and covers a minimal area of skin, first aid and ibuprophen should be fine. If it is blistered, charred, or covers a large area, you should get an ambulance. I think your parents will forgive the expense. In either case, keep the area cool and clean. Do not put any sort of creams or ointments on the burn, and ignore the old wives tale about butter helping a burn, as this can cause infection. If your sister is in minimal pain, she'll probably be okay. If she is in severe pain (or no pain, indicating nerve damage), call 911 now!

OMG!! I am sitting here reading what these people are telling you.. NO, don't put any cold wrap on it. You run the risk of the burn becoming worse. Try and get her to the Childerens hospital nearest to you. Burns are treated different now adays!!! It sounds like to me she has 2nd degree, or partial thickness. Without looking at it, thats what my guess would be. PLEASE, PLEASE don't listen to these people. You will make it worse. You don't need to call 911. But you do need to get her to the hospital ASAP. If you have other questions about this, just drop me a EMAIL, anytime.

PLEASE see if a neighbor or family friend can carry you to the ER. Give her Tylenol for pain and try wrapping an ice pack (this could be a frozen pack of veggies) in a thin towel to put on the wound to ease the burning. Don't touch the burn with your fingers so as to reduce the risk of infection. Call your parents...it can't be stressed enough!!

Shame on the people who advise dosing pain meds!!!!
Do not EVER advise a possible child to dose meds to another child ! This is unfounded and irresponsible. You have absolutely no clue who these people are and what age the person asking the question is.There are many things to consider when dosing a med to a patient let alone to a child !SHAME,SHAME,SHAME !!!!!!

You definitely need to call 911 just to be safe. You can't be the judge of how bad it may be. Besides paramedics can treat her burn and make her more comfortable and if needed, take her to the hospital. Please do this so she doesn't have to suffer. Good luck!

If the skin looks like a 2ed degree then call your parents. If it isn't hurting her at all, just a mild pain then give her pain killer. It won't damage her unless its deep or really bad.
