There are two ways to go about getting a dog that is under $600.

Most dogs you find in pet stores under $600 are that cheap because they are puppy milled, and you will end up with a dog with many health problems and be supporting puppy mills.

Instead why not go to a local animal shelter and meet some of the smaller dogs and see if you bond with them

Get a breed book and see which suits your lifestyle the best. That's what I did and it was the best thing I could have done; a new pet is a BIG, permanent decision.
I decided a Pug would best suit me and my family and I was right, I couldn't have made a better choice. (He just turned 4 last month.) He is cuddly now, but was very hyper as a puppy. He never barks, unless there is good reason to. The term used to describe Pugs, "a lot of dog in a small space" is very true, lol. I only paid $450 for him, which is average where I live but I know someone on the east coast and in the northwest told me they run well over $1,000 there so I think geographical location is a big factor w/ dog breeds (in the U.S., anyway).

A shiatsu is a wonderful dog for an apartment. I have one . They do not need a lot of exercise, mine runs around the table for 5 min each day than is tired out. She is also tired to a litter box. These dogs are sweet temper bu beware they love to cuddle on your lap. If you look around you could pick one up for 600 of course you could pay more. Be careful of your breeder check check and recheck.
Remember The animal shelter sometimes get these dogs in so keep an eye out. Good luck on your search.

Go to a shelter and get a dog there. All the shelter asks for is a $50 donation. Also there have been studies that show that shelter mutts are smarter and make better pets then dogs from breeders. Last, you are saving a dogs life.

There are tons of cuddly dogs in shelters for way under $600!! and people will admire you more for saving a life than for wasting your hard earned cash!! think about it at least.

You should avoid pet stores all together. Go for the animal shelter and save an animal. The best part about the animal shelter is you get so many extras that are needed for the dog like shots and spay/neutering.
There are so many horror stories about pet stores getting animals from puppy mills that I will never even shop at a pet store that sells animals.

A chihuahua would be good for an apartment if they didn't bark so much, but you would probably be able to train it not to.

If chihuahuas are more then $600, then I would suggest getting a mixed breed dog.

Even if you do find a purebred for under $600, you would also have to pay for all it's shots, for it to be fixed (unless it's being used for breeding purposes) and so on. If you get a crossbreed from a shelter you wouldn't have to pay for all of that..

Does the apartment cost under $600 or do you want the dog to cost under $600?

Check out the shelter, or local rescues, see what they have for under $600, and look for the cuddly one with traits that fit your lifestyle. You aren't going to get a quality purebred for that price, so you should save a life and get a rescue...

For $600 it better clean the damn apartment and bring me breakfast in bed. Holy cow that's a wide budget range. I would go with rescuing one from a shelter, but if not, I would get a Dachshund. They are badger dogs and will "burrow" in bed with you. They also (regular ones) don't have a lot of hair to deal with.
