Interrelatedness is an important concept for indigenous religions as it speaks to the relationship of the people to the environment and, therefore, has a specific purpose as it pertains to survival. The importance of these relationships first developed in people experiencing different aspects of life and then by using these observations to form conclusions. Such conclusions provided a spiritual purpose by explaining everyday situations within a larger conceptual framework. In this way the people could feel a sense of togetherness and purpose while less at the mercy of the unknown.

its just ecology - science also says everything is interrelated.
Why is it important? Because it feels good to be a part of something rather than isolated in your little box. And because it makes people care about things outside of themselves.
