Have you ever really looked at a water lily? It is shy and bold and it only blooms during the daylight hours and then closes up tight at night. They cover the surface of the water in summer and lounge upon large green leaves like a teen age beauty queen at a swimming pool.

They represent all the mystery and sensuality of youth and all the innocence of childhood. Take a look and see what you can see...

If you are talking about the enormous waterlily paintings, Monet was commissioned to paint those for the famous installation at the Orangerie, Paris. Those lilies were not about light...this time...they were about his love for Alice Hoschede, the widow of Ernest Hoschede, whom Monet loved dearly.

You tend to paint what you see and like. He had a beautiful garden and pond which he used for his pictures. Lots of waterlilies in the pond

Probably because they were there -- in his garden at Giverny. Monet painted in nature (remember all those haystacks?) and did a lot of paintings at his idyllic retreat/residence in France.
