My son is 3 years old. He went to his fathers this past weekend and he took him outside to play for like 2 hours. First and formost, isnt that irresponsible? Taking a kid out in 34' weather? Anyways, He woke up Mon morning at like 8...and didnt eat anything. He had some water, but then he laid down on the couch for a little bit. Then we went into his room. He went down for a nap at about 12 noon and didnt wake up until about 4:30ish. He came back out into the living room watched some tv and fell asleep on the couch at 6pm. We put him in his room and he woke up screaming at 9 pm. He was shaking real bad and I took his temp in his ear and it was 103.3. ISNT THAT BAD? Anyways we took him to the hospital, and with in 5 min, I checked it again, and it went down 5'. Weird huh? So, we left (we only live 2 min from there) and he went back to bed. Now his temp has been going up and down all day. Doctor said to just give him plenty of liquids. Thats it? What do i do? He still has the shakes?

I doubt him playing outside is the reason I am sure he was dress for the weather........But I just went through this with my son and it ran it's course I had too do Tylenol and Motrin and it took about 4 days too get better. Just give him rest, fluids and TLC and he should be fine.

Well, this will guarantee that it won't be the best answer....
No it isn't irresponsible providing the child was dressed warm. The father would have had to pay attention to the child making sure he wasn't cold, and that the child was not sick at the time. Wind chill would have to be considered though as would the amount of sun that day.
The 103.3 fever is getting bad and you were right in taking him in to be checked. The doctor is correct on the fluids as dehydration is very quick and if he is sweating when the fever "breaks" so much more so. It sounds like the flu, but even a doctor would not make a diagnosis w/o seeing the patient and ruling out other possible causes.

I would definitely take him back to the hospital and let them make a full examination, if he has the shakes, isn't eating and has a temp that is his body letting you know there is something wrong. With little kids, sometimes it could be nothing and sometimes it can be something really bad. My son at 28 days had a high fever and no other symptoms and the doctors were very concerned and ended up doing a spinal tap. Its better to be safe than sorry take him to the doctor because he's only 3 and he can't really communicate to you what all is happening to him..

You do just as the doctor says. Plenty of fluids, alittle tylenol and plenty of rest and in no time he will be back as usual. Sounds like a virus that any kid gets constantly throught their childhood years. The cold weather kills viruses not breeds them. Your son caught some kind of bacteria(kids can get awful sick just by touching a handle on a shopping cart) thats why he is sick. Its a myth the cold makes us sick. A child can have a 103 temp and with a little tylenol be back to normal in 1 half hour, then when the tylenol wears off, the temp soars again. Your child is just sick. I wouldnt blame the Dad, I would probably thank him for being such a good dad that he played with his son for 2 hours, nowadays thats rare. Good Luck

He's shaking b/c that's a little body's natural response to a fluctuating temperature...like he has the chills. Sometimes if kiddos are carrying some kind of bug and then they overdo it(like your son did outside), all the physical activity lowers his immune system so he's more susceptible to the infection. 103 is bad but don't be overly worried unless it's 103 consistently for 24 hrs...a persistent, high fever is when you need to re-call the Dr. Otherwise, his body is just fighting an infection so alternate Tylenol and Motrin and definitely push the fluids. He just needs to rest and let his body fight off whatever it is that he caught. I hope this helps! Good luck!

First of all as long as your son was dressed appropriately I see absolutely nothing wrong with his dad taking him out to play...and being out in the cold is NOT what made him sick(cold weather does not make people sick...bacteria and viruses do)
As for the temp...although sometimes scary 103.3 is not really all that bad. The reason it went down a little was because you took him out in the colder weather of course making his body a little cooler.
As for what to do...alternate tylenol and motrin to keep the temp down. Also let him run around in as little clothes as possible which will help drop his temp.(of course make sure he is not getting too cold) and of course make sure he is getting plenty of liquids to keep him from getting dehydrated(which happens very easily if his temp were to get up to 104)

first off I do not think going out to play in 34 degree weather is irresponsible, unless he wanted to go back in but dad wouldn;t let him. I live in Minnesota and at this time of year 34 is balmy. When I was a kid I would be outside for so long in weather that had reached the low teens that i couldn;t feel my toes or my cheeks and my scarf was covered in snot from my nose that was running that i could not feel, we LOVED it.
As for him being sick, you could always get a second opinion and I would definitely get him checked again if he doesnt start improving soon.

Has he had the flu shot? Also the shakes could be a febrile seizure from the temp changing so fast. Ask your doc about doubling up on the meds tylenol (acetaminaphrin) and motrin (ibuprofen) to make sure he's never off one for a fever spike.

that is prob because they gave him panadol or nurofen wich the shaking is probbably from a febroil tempreature if he feels hotter than normal and is uncomfortable give him panadol to bring the temp down check him again half hour later and if it is still high you can give him a dose of nurofen he may have an ear infection i would get him rechecked by a GP
