A town is a small semi-urban area that may or may not be incorporated. It is considered less organized than a city, more than a village.

A colony is any area governed from outside the area. The citizens of a colony are subjects of a government that does not reside in the area. The American colonies of the 18th Century were governed by the king of England.

No a colony is not the same as a town. Take Gibraltar..Gibraltar is a country on the Spanish border but it's a British coloney.
