Perhaps the same number who are believing that Jesus' bones were discovered.

If you don't believe in atheists, they why are you talking to them?
Scientists believed that the Piltdown Man was a real find and yes it turned out to be a hoax. The hoaxer has never been identified. However, it was science that also uncovered the hoax. This hoax does not undo all of the research and all of the finds made in the last two centuries. Also, this event happened almost a century ago. In 1912.

I think that Lucy is a more recent discovery that sheds even more light on evolution.

You believe in them enough to talk to them. You believe in them enough to address them. Even if you tag on the "so called" part, you believe that an atheist is going to read your question.

Atheists? Pilt Down Man?
The Pilt Down Man had nothing to do with religion at all; it was supposedly the 'missing link' in an ecological theory, which is science.
If you've equated science with atheism, you're more confused than most people.
Jesus is less believable than Pilt Down Man; there's been not one shred of verifiable evidence about Jesus.

Better question is how many so called Christians believed the Bible to be the true word of God before they even read it?

You are now being intentionally disrespectful. The fact that you have tacked evangelizing on the end of a smear campaign against a group of people is reprehensible and makes a mockery of the good Christians that I know. Shame on you.

at least they were ready to admit it was a hoax, instead of trying to save face and keep saying it was the real thing for 2,000 years.

No idea, I imagine 80% of those who were mentally aware at the time are dead. You can ask them in heaven.
