i think its a beautiful way to go against the status-quo. women who do that are often fun and free spirited. men and society should stop looking at the hair and the woman with the hair. i would do it, but im such a chicken

Why not? People are only hurt by it if they choose to make it a problem for themselves, usually men who act like they can tell a woman exactly what to do with her body.

It's a personal choice. If you feel comfortable doing it, then so be it. Sometimes it's done for medical reasons.
