I am a sewing machine tech and own many vintage machines. I look mostly at thrift stores, www.craigslist.com (for your area), eBay where I sell a few. Most importantly though remember that you may have to pay 50 - 75 dollars to have one serviced if its not perfect running condition. Be sure to try it out first if you can. If you would like go ahead and contact me, I could help you more. Good luck.

well there are a few places that I would look but it requires some hunting. First I would look on www.craigslist.com for your area...you may find one there. Then I would go to all the places in your area that sell antiques (will be pricey here) and then like a salvation army where they recycle old used things. Also look at garage and yard sales. The best place is an antique shop. You can call ahead and ask if they have one instead of driving all over the place. That should get you started. It would depend on the model and condition the unit is that you are looking to buy. But you can always negotiate. I would't pay more than $200 for a really nice one...but that is just me.

Not sure where to find them, but I heard that a vintage Singer in good condition is worth no more than $150. They're very common.

Salvation Army, St. Vincents. I was in St. Vincents on Saturday, and they had a treadle for $25.00. I have no idea if it worked, but they always have 3-4.
