In the Torah, Jezebel is a queen of ancient Israel, whose story is told in 1 Kings. The author introduces her as a Phoenician princess, the daughter of King Ithobaal I of Tyre, who marries King Ahab. She turns Ahab away from the God of the Jews, and towards the worship of her god, Baal. The two then allow temples of Baal to open in Israel. Jezebel uses her control over Ahab to subject Israel to tyranny. After she slaughters the prophets of the Lord, the prophet Elijah confronts her to charge her with abominations. She responds by threatening to kill him as well. After Ahab's death, Jezebel continues to rule through her son Ahaziah. When Ahaziah is killed in battle, she exercises control through her other son, Joram. Joram is killed by Jehu, who confronts Jezebel in Jezreel and urges her servants to kill her by defenestration. They comply, and her corpse is left in the street to be eaten by dogs leaving only her skull, feet, and hands in fulfillment of Elijah's prophecy. In the New Testament, she was a whore. BAD BAD NAME!!

Well, the first thing I think of when I hear 'Jezebel', is the Jezebel in the Bible. She was a worshipper of Baal, and persecuted the Christians. In the end, she was thrown from an upstairs window, and trampled by horses.
I like the name, but would never use it on my daughter.

if you name your child jezebel when that child gets older and find out the meaning of her name I think she will be maddddd at you. In the Bible first Kings or even in the dictionary it gives you the meaning of this name and I know you don't want your child to carry this meaning for the rest of her life. A jezebel is a slut! She is the other woman that destoys families.

Yes, I like it. The name has a beautiful sound to it. However, as you can see by your deluge of negative responses, it means something quite bad to a lot of people. Your G-d-fearing consultants above have a rather thin knowledge of their apparently revered holy book (so holy that they are willing to imply something terrible if you merely use a name from it that they don't like). Jezebel was not a "whore" nor was her villiany at all associated with being slutty or loose. Nor was she even around at the same time as King David. It's pretty revealing, frankly, that they are so hooked on labeling Jezebel as a whore. Whatever villiany you want to impose on her, she stood firm by her husband. Rather, the bibical view is more that she maniuplated her husband, King Ahab, into turning away from Yaweh and allowing Baal into the Kingdom. Plenty of other women in Bible who are held in higher esteem were far looser with their partners or sex (or were actually offered to others by their revered husbands).
Ultimately, religious circles reserve Jezebel such villiany among all women because she was the nemisis to the prophet Elijah. Again, tellingly, though, no woman speaks like Jezebel, or stands up for herself like Jezebel. Taking the Bibical tale at face value (accepting its characterizations), she engages in scheming, lies, and has her enemies murdered. It is pretty convenient to ignore that this describes a fair proportion of the heros of the Bible as well (just they murder the heathen, they lie to take from the heathen, etc).
Don't worry, you'll probably get plenty more negative responses after this one. You may do well to take the mere fact of these heated views as sufficient reason to never use the name. Who wants to attract all that bigotry? If you use it anyway, I think it's a beautiful name.

I love the name Jezebel. But......
In the Bible, God let Queen Jezebel be eaten by dogs for her wickedness. She was a horrible woman who's own personal cult involved sacrificing babies to false gods in a fiery furnace. Yikes!
Jezebel also means "darkness".
Knowing that, it's really up to you. I still think it's pretty....

In the Bible, Jezebel was a "painted woman" and a harlot.
If you name your child Jezebel, you will handicap her. There are many, many ignorant people in the world, and the attitude inflicted toward your daughter will be sometimes blatant, and very often invisible or subtle.
DON'T DO IT.

Nah, I don't think Jezebel would be a very desirable name. When the girl grows up she'll probably get rid of the name as soon as possible.

Well, Jezebel introduced the entire nation of Israel to the worship of Baal (the god of sex) back in ancient history. She was thrown off a building and eaten by dogs with nothing left but her hands. On the other hand, it is a beautiful name and my husband and I seriously considered it for our third daughter. We ran it by some people and it was met with VERY negative responses. Personally, I love the name it just has too much baggage with it

A "Jezebel" is a name that was used in a book for a promiscuous woman. Don't really want to say it, but common language..."whore". Personally I wouldn't use the name if I were you. But it's your decision none the less.
