For instance, do you count it as a step each time a foot hits the ground, such as right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot, 1, 2, 3, 4 steps, or does it go, right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot, 1, 2 steps?

Each step you take is a step. Right foot, left foot is 2 steps. Do you have a pedometer? We use the Omron Walking style, which is very accurate and easy to use. Good luck in getting your 10,000 steps a day. It's not as easy as some people might think.

No, there are such things as a Pedometer. They are relatively cheap and easy to find, this counts your steps, and it is believe it or not very accurate, anyhow. That you be my best suggestion. Good Luck.

Invest in a pedometer. They're relatively inexpensive (you can find one at your local sporting goods store...they take like, one battery).
You can set the pedometer to measure your stride and based on the stride, it will count your steps throughout the day. Don't try to count them on your own...that's practically impossible!
