That was announced in November, 2006. There has been no smoking in most public buildings like malls and restaurants, workplaces in BC for years now though. These are just tighter restrictions like people smoking on school property, etc

This is old news in Saskatchewan and in most places in Alberta. The ban is everywhere and smoking outside, on the property is also prohibited. The new ban is on company vehicles and is looking at fining people smoking in their homes, with minors present.
The ban was voted on in our local city and was passed ( smoker and non smokers were asked to vote). Months after and to this day, most businesses are crying over the loss of business. Where are all these people that voted to ban it, if anything, you'd think business would be booming.
Right or wrong, smokers should have rights, it is a legalized substance. By pushing them away or casting disgust on them is not acceptable. Why should they be treated like dirt, wasn't this country based on freedom of choice. Why can't they have a place to go and have no fear of being chastised for their habit. Where did their freedom go and why do non smokers keep beating on them, when they're already down and declared the winner.
Your freedoms are being tested and this is just the start, don't be surprised when other bans will follow.

Excellent.. Laws just passed in Ohio to ban smoking in ALL public building, vehicles, and gathering places (including outside)... Its about time i get to go out and enjoy myself with out having to inhale all that smoke, and come out smelling like an ash tray!
Just to comment further... I understand that smoking is a RIGHT that you have, and yes it is a legalized substance and you should be able to smoke if you so choose. I can also see the smokers side in saying they are the ones who are now being discriminated against and their rights are being violated. HOWEVER I as a non-smoker also have the right to breath fresh air, and in the past my rights were being violated by the smokers. I should be able to breath fresh air if i so choose. It was not fun going out to eat or bowling or something with all that smoke. It was the right thing to do to put it up to a vote and let majority rule.
As far as business hurting. here in Ohio it is still a little early to get real data but the preliminary results are that business is either staying the same or slightly higher. I don;t see how it could possible be hurting though because people are not going to leave the state to go out to eat or spend their money. Because it is a State wide thing all business is being treated the exact same so no one place will gain or loss more customers.

I think it's a great idea. Edmonton and some surrounding area have already done this, and speaking from a non-smoker's viewpoint, I love it! It's so nice to go into restaurants and bars and not have to breathe in second hand smoke.

I think it is marvelous. Although I appreciate that there are people who still choose to smoke despite all the evidence against it, the majority of people don't smoke and don't want to be plagued by it.
It is so very stinky!
