there is amount for 288 on my credit from something that occured in 2003 and i pd it off 2 years ago. guess what it is still on there showing i owe this amount. i disputed it with the credit bureaus with a copy of the cancled check. They all wrote back stating they cannot use this-then then enclosed a copy of my credit report making this collection was verified on 2/07. I am in the process of refiancing my home and this is having some affect on this. I contacted the collection agency that is handling this and they told me they will review this check and it will take 6-12 months to investigate this. Now should i just pay this again? to help my credit score/dose it affect my score with them showing it was verfied? on the credit report it shows that it will removed in 2010. i am lost and need some good advise.

If you had paid the account and they are showing the amount as a past due amount, that is a violation. If it is showing as "paid" then they are probably reporting correctly in that aspect, though they may be reporting violations in other ways.

You might send the collection agency a debt validation letter, send it certified mail return receipt. When you get the green card back, send a dispute to the credit reporting agencys.

The reason it will be removed from your credit report in 2010 is because items stay on your report for 7 years. You can't remove the details from your credit report if you paid it off. It should show as paid on your credit report, but will remain on your report until it falls off naturally after the 7 years go by.

It should be showing on the credit report as late, paid. If it doesn't show as paid, there is clearly a mistake. Either way, it should show up on your credit report.

Just make sure you're not confusing an item paid with removing credit history. Even items that are paid off in full should remain on your credit report. If you're writing to the bureaus to remove the late completely you're making a mistake, as removal is only warranted if the creditor made a mistake to begin with.

Once you agree to pay something, you basically admit fault, and it resolves the issue, but the history remains for some time after, in your case, until 2010.

FYI, you can't pay it off again, and you can't get it removed because you admitted guilt by paying it. It shouldn't affect your credit score much anyways if it's that old and that small.

I'd look at other areas of your credit that might be dragging you down such as outstanding debt, inquiries, new lines of credit, etc.
