It's not really our place to judge who or what God should damn or not, is it? So saying "God damnit" would be saying this person or thing should be damned and that just isn't our job.

Not that that makes a difference in my life, but that's the idea.

God sent Jesus to earth to save mankind, who were God's enemies.

So we need to have the same attitude. Read Matthew 5:21-24.

If we judge and condemn others, then we do not get forgiven.

We should not show disrespect for God and judge, see Jude 9 when Michael did not dare bring a judgment against the Devil.

We are using his name in vain, not that we are saying YHWH, but we are referring to the Creator.

If we have a habit of saying it, we should repent and find other clean words to use for our frustrations.

That is using God's name in vain. It is literately abusing God's name. And you can't justify it by saying you are asking God to damn something. Instead you should be asking God to forgive that action or person, and pray for their redemption. I will not continue to watch a movie or program where that phrase is used. If its a movie I've purchased, I immediately take the tape or DVD out of the machine and destroy it. If its on TV, I turn it off or change channels It sickens me to see it used here, even in question form.

God is holy and set apart. The Israelites were afraid to even speak a name for God because they understood this holiness. Using "God" in a casual way is disrespectful and brings God down to a common level.

Certainly God understands when people use words that really have no meaning for them. Still he warns that words are powerful and that we ought to guard our mouths and control the words that come out of them. We should never speak the name of God without thinking about what we are saying.

I don't know whether it bothers Him or not, but it is definitely a foul bit of language.
If you think about what that phrase states, you will see that it is assigning something or someone to everlasting doom; not a thing within our power.

BTW, someone said it's because we are not to take God's name in vain.
God's name is not 'God'. That is His title. God the Father has probably billions of names, which may be part of the reason that He sent His son to us.
That name we know, Christ Jesus...another BTW, Christ is NOT Jesus' last name, that too is a title.

Well, if you believe that God has something against it, you are doing a bad thing.

I try to only use it when something really is or I think that it really is God damned.

Like Terrorists and their leadership, for instance. There is nothing to repent from when used in that application. They are God damned in their activities ( a little scripture to prove my point) :
Isaiah 59:6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

7Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

8The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

9Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.

10We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.

I suspect that God just laughs. Like I'm going to make God condemn something I'm angry with. God is more likely to be bothered when people say things like, "God told me that..." or "God is with us...." Now that's really taking God's name in vain!

This is something that is blown way out of proportion... you aren't "Commanding" god to damn something any more than you are "Commanding" him to bless something when you say "God Bless You"

If someone is highly offended by this, they're just looking for something to be upset about.

A deity wouldn't really care, so long as you weren't using your language directly against him or his people.... why paint God to be so petty?

You aren't "taking his name in vain" when you are seriously upset with something and wish that God would intervene and damn it for you.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/damn <--- there's damn... read what it means.

Why is it that we are allowed to ask God to bless things but not to harm things that harm us?

Think about it.

Ok...just for a moment pretend that you have little disobedient kids....
You have provided everything that they have needed,
You love them more than anything in the world,
and you would do anything for them....
Now, your very own child is yelling and cursing and says "Chippy Damnit" and meaning it to be as absolutely derogatory as possible...would you appreciate it??
No...because you deserve respect for all you have done for them!

Because the Bible tells us NOT to take His name in vain...it is also wrong to say oh God and stuff like that
