If the Lord gives you with his ten hands how much can you hold and if the Lord takes away from you with his ten hands how much can you hold. The Lord knows what is ultimately beneficial for you
What you may call as bad is not bad from eternal time scale.
King Bali was taken away the whole universe by the Lord on the pretext of begging three steps. Bhakta Prahlada, the famous devotee of Narasimha, and the grand father of Bali appreciated the act of Lord in the form of Vamana in relationship with his grandson Bali Maharaja.

Srimad Bhagavatam 8.22.17
Prahlada Maharaja said: My Lord, it is Your Lordship who gave this Bali the very great opulence of the post of heavenly king, and now, today, it is You who have taken it all away. I think You have acted with equal beauty in both ways. Because his exalted position as King of heaven was putting him in the darkness of ignorance, You have done him a very merciful favor by taking away all his opulence.

As it is said, yasyaham anugrhnami harisye tad-dhanam sanaih (SB 10.88.8). It is by the mercy of the Lord that one gets all material opulence, but if such material opulence causes one to become puffed up and forget the process of self-realization, the Lord certainly takes all the opulence away. The Lord bestows mercy upon His devotee by helping him find out his constitutional position. For that purpose, the Lord is always ready to help the devotee in every way. But material opulence is sometimes dangerous because it diverts one's attention to false prestige by giving one the impression that he is the owner and master of everything he surveys, although actually this is not the fact. To protect the devotee from such a misunderstanding, the Lord, showing special mercy, sometimes takes away his material possessions. Yasyaham anugrhnami harisye tad-dhanam sanaih

Note:- yasyaham anugrhnami harisye tad-dhanam sanaih
(SB 10.88.8) meaning is The Personality of Godhead said: If I especially favor someone, I gradually deprive him of his wealth. Then the relatives and friends of such a poverty-stricken man abandon him. In this way he suffers one distress after another.

The next verses the Lord spoke( 9 to 11), are as follows,

When he becomes frustrated in his attempts to make money and instead befriends My devotees, I bestow My special mercy upon him.

A person who has thus become sober fully realizes the Absolute as the highest truth, the most subtle and perfect manifestation of spirit, the transcendental existence without end. In this way realizing that the Supreme Truth is the foundation of his own existence, he is freed from the cycle of material life.

Because I am difficult to worship, people generally avoid Me and instead worship other deities, who are quickly satisfied. When people receive kingly opulences from these deities, they become arrogant, intoxicated with pride and neglectful of their duties. They dare to offend even the demigods who have bestowed benedictions upon them.

Luck, fate, destiny are nothing but the results of your actions (in regards of your expectations) with respect to your surroundings and the situations. I don't think any phot has got anything to do with it. Some times the results are not what you expected (bad luck), some times they are more than what you expected (lucky). Don't just jump on the superstitious conclusions, keep trying with your actions (karma)...
