A practice is a common word meaning profession or business. It is not confined to the area of medicine.

I think the word "practice" might be used because in any job or profession, it is usually possible to get better the longer you do the job. A new doctor is often not as good as an experienced one just like a brand new student of anything is not as good as one with experience.

It is a term coined from the time the Socratic oath was created, and everyone adapted it without question. We could create a new one because the word is outdated..
