prese control+alt+delete to see what programs are running currently. Use yahoo or google to search for the operation name. There are alot of sites out there (that search engines will find for you so you dont have to know which site) that catalouge processes and their intent.

To disable these process permanenently (i.e. make it so they dont start up with your computer):
1. click start
2. click run
3. type MSconfig into the run dialog box and click ok
4. click the startup tab
5. Uncheck programs you do not wish to start up when windows boots.
6. Programs you dont need are: AOL Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Quicktime, Realplayer, WinAmp. All of these programs can be started manually by clicking on the appropriate desktop or start menu items. While programs are running they eat up resources and slow down your computer.
7. when finished you will be prompted to restart for changes to take effect. When you restart (now or later doesnt really matter), you will recieve a warning about selective startup. This is normal and everything is fine. Click the box for "never show me this again" then click ok.

IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT A PROGRAM IS AND YOU CANT FIND IT IN A SEARCH DONT TOUCH IT!

Assuming you are running Windows XP the quick answer to this question is to hold down CTRL>ALT>DELETE to pop up the windows task manager and click on the applications tab and that will tell you what legitimate programs are running at this time. you will also notice under the processes tab a long list of items running as well, alot of these you will probably not recognize, but are essential to running windows and should not be edited unless you know what you are looking for.( turning these processes on and off will not permanently "mess up" your computer but will require a restart to get the processes running again)

If you don't notice anything in the applications tab that you do not recognize and the reason you are asking this question is because you think something is running that is affecting your performance, my best advise is to first run your virus scan to check for viruses, then use an anti spy-ware software to scan your computer for spy-ware, i recommend ad-aware se it is free and simple to use. spy-ware will not show up in the task manager and will significantly effect the performance of your computer.
