I got a really bad sunburn this weekend directly on my tattoo. Will this one time really mess it up? Anything preventative I can do now? I haven't started peeling or blistering yet. And yes I have learned my lesson... :-/

You will be OK this time. But you have been warned. Do not waste your money and artist's creativity. Get some SPF.

A lot of it depends on your tatooist's skills. I had one done on the back of my shoulder without doing enough research. The outline was way too dark for the style and details I wanted in the tatoo. This was bad enough but then less than a year later on a camping trip I made the mistake of starting with the wine coolers before remembering to put on sunscreen and ended up with a severe 2nd degree sunburn. All of the outlines blurred and too many reputable artists have said that it would be very difficult to fix. So I am facing having it removed and may or may not get another one. It doesn't sound like yours is going to be that bad though.

One thing is too keep it moisturized, try aloe vera and/or use a topical antibiotic.

Most important...if you peel...don't pick at it!

Good luck!

Stay out of the sun until the Tattoo is completely healed i.e. 2 to 3 weeks because the new Tattoo will burn very fast. After your Tattoo is healed you should always put a sunscreen on your Tattoo when going in the sun because the sun fades the colours away.

Don't worry, it will not come off. ;-)
It might fade the colors just a little bit though. If you would have regular sunburn it will fade the colors more. Keep it smooth by putting some after sun cream on it, to moisterise your skin.
