our gas fireplace stopped working..?

its probably at least 10 yrs old. in the winter we keep it just on low or pilot and it keeps our additon warm enough. we came home last night and it was off, hubby vacummed and cleaned it out, he lit the pilot and held it in-it wouldnt "spread"- but as soon as he stopped holding the button it went out.we really dont have the money right now for someone to come look at it..

Did you pay your gas bill?
Many models have a auto shut-off if the CO level or O2 level is not correct in the home. Should have someone check it before attemping to re-light
