Working out at all will never be a waste of time...better a little than never. You can definitely see results -- you just need to make sure that you change up your routine to keep your body from adjusting. Try interval training (walk for 3 minutes, run for 2 minutes and repeat for a total of 30 minutes...you can also apply this principal to any activity, you just need periods of high intensity mixed with periods of low intensity). Talk to a trainer at you gym and get him/her to suggest new strength-training exercises you can do.
You may not be motivated to work out at home, but what about outside? Take your 3-year old to the park or put him in the stroller and take him for a walk...this will increase mommy-son time and increase your overall calorie burn.

Well, at least you are getting some time in (for a minute there, I had to wonder if you were a frienf of mine who experiences the same problem when leaving her son in the daycare at her gym). Is there anyone else who could watch your son one more day during the week? Don't give it up all together...that would definitely not be the answer...but try to find a way to squeeze in one more day.

Make sure it's 2 full body workouts consisting of core movements that work more than 1 muscle group at a time. This month's oxygen magazine has a great routine in there for 2 to 3 times a week, go buy one, it's the article called lean potion #9.

Twice a week for 20 minutes is perfectly ok for weight lifting. However, if you can strap on your sneakers and put that boy in a wagon or stroller you should try to get 30 minutes of cardio (running/fast walkng) once or twice more per week. Just do it and it will become a routine.

Why not try exercising with your son. A fast walk round the park for 45mins twice a week in addition to your programme would help. You are not wasting your time with what you are doing but if doing it for wieght loss then think about your diet more.
