First and foremost, quail are some of the best tasting wild game out there!
Next, you have to find good cover and food sources for the birds. The birds prefer to eat like seeds from weeds and grass and also corn and soybeans and wheat. I prefer to hunt with pointing dogs, but only because I find it easier and like to watch the dogs work. As long as the dogs are well trained, they will do all the work and all you have to do is shoot the birds when they flush.
Look for the birds in grassy and dense cover. Common areas are fence rows, ditches, and grassy areas on field edges.
While it is fun to hunt with dogs, dogs are not necessary to hunt quail. You can "walk them up" but you have to be sure to search all the cover. Kick brush piles, walk through thick cover and search thick grass areas. Quail can slip by you easily when you are not using a dog, but it is still possible to flush them for a shot.

Best to use a dog, but can be done by yourself or with a friend. Wear orange vest and hat. 20GA with 7-1/2 shot is a good load. basically you walk and kick brush till they come flying out. Once your heart stops pounding and they are still in range then fire on them making sure your partner or dog is out of way. When the quail jump your heart will no matter how many times you hunt. You probably need to use dogs and be sure to watch out for fellow hunters. I don't hunt much quail.

your shot gun barrel length 20 to 28 inches you don't want a barrel Length of more then 28 inches. because if you are going though brush longer barrels will be harder to move around and get caught on every thing. 28 to 12 gauge with improved cylinder choke are best with one ounce of 7 1/2 to 9 shot.
