Actually not all dogs can swim. Shih tzus can, but if their coats aren't trimmed, the weight of the wet hair will tire them very, very quickly. Not a breed that will enjoy much swimming.

All dogs can swim. That is why they call it the dog paddle.

I had an old english sheepdog and even with a full coat she could swim. Problem was the shakes when she got out! And she took hours to dry to the skin. Made for harder grooming the next day as well.

But she could swim just fine. Once we were in a canoe and she tipped me because a loon surfaced a few feet from us and let out a call. There she went to catch it! Lucky we were close to shore and I can swim too.

Shih Tzu's aren't known to be good swimmers. I have put mine in the water.. they swim but not very well and not for long periods of time. I put mine in the water so they wouldn't know what happens if they jump into my pool..They stay clear of it..They do not like it in the water...but give them a hose to play in and look out..they will play in a hose for hours.

All dogs can swim. Some better than others. Some like to swim more than others.

I'd introduce water in a baby pool first and move up if the dog likes it.
