Why did Islam give women less rights than their husbands?

Question

I notice that Islam put many restrictions on women way more than on men. For instance, a Muslim woman can not do any of the following without a permission from her husband:

1- To travel
2- To work
3- To study (other than Fiqh, which is Islamic laws)
4- To go out (shopping, meeting a neighbour...etc.)
5- To receive any guests (either male or female)

Is there any reason for all those restrictions on women in Islam?

(P.S., Most Muslim countries still apply all the above rulings against women)

Because its a backward religion that only searches to denigrate women. Their religion (like their male-dominated society) still lives in the stone age and pretends people to live along that.
Heavens help a Western society that ever pretends to learn something of these idiots!
If there is one thing that separates the West from those backward places, it is that, in general terms, the West went through all that crap 200 yrs ago...and emerged into something progressive and modern where women have found their place...AND it came about without any wars or having to consult some 'ol fart which weirdos refer to as Allah, in order to do it!!

I'm a Muslim and I have a clause in my marriage paper that says I can be granted a divorce anytime I want.
If my husband tried to deny me any of those stuff he would be in deep doodoo.
I am an engineer. I work part time and I study. I've traveled around without my husband and I hang out with my friends (male and female) anytime I wish.
There is nothing in Islam that says you can't travel, work, study, go out, or have guests over. Those laws were brought by some other people.
Both wives and husbands can set up boundaries for each other. If some don't like their wives to travel alone then the wife is allowed to ask the same thing in return.

Note all the restrictions on women in Judaism, and the ones in Christianity too. It is modern society, not the religions, that has forced change in practices. The religions and the religious books like the bible and koran, still have all the restrictive language and tenets.

Islam imposes a corresponding duty upon a husband for any restriction imposed for the security and well being of a woman associated with him as a wife.The restriction should not be viewed rigidly but the corresponding duty and collective enjoyment if given way makes all the sense of observing any such restriction freely.

You actually giving an exagerated truth. Women are permitted to work if the family needs it, if the family can survive on the male's income then the women should raise the children. This is done so that the kids have a good life and are not in daycare all the time. You only study what you need to know. They are allowed to go out, even in the places where they are beaten they go out with out their males. They may have females guests, but not males. Thats actually a good thing if the think about the evil intentions of some guys.

This is not so in all of Islam, only certiant sects and places.

The fact is muslim women do everything on her own whtever you have mentioned ! well in Saudi Arbia yes there are some restrictions but this is the only muslim country which has such restriction and that too is not that well applied.......and in rest of the countries women are as free as men !

Oh and btw , My muslim country has elected a woman as prime minister "twice" , and have pretty smart represtation in Assembly !! have you ever elected a woman president or prime minister in your country??

What Islam are you talking about?
A woman can Travel if she pleases, but MOST prefer to do it with their husbands. I don't go out anywhere without my Husband because it FEELS wrong.
All Muslim women CAN and DO work. All of the Women in my Husbands family OWN buisnesses. Many Muslim women don't work because their Husband takes care of them and don't want to see their wives stressed about Jobs and bringing in Money. The women should be at home with the children...
Alll Muslim women CAN and Do study....I don't know of ANY Muslim women who haven''t studied.
All Muslim women CAN and DO go out shopping, on their own or with their other female friends.
All Muslim women CAN and Do receive guests into their home. Male are only allowed when their husbands or fathers or Brothers are there. And that is GREAT!! I would NEVER allow ANY man into my home without my Husband being there.

Women are allowed to travel. The Prophet's (PBUH) travelled all of the time and never restricted her. She was also an educated businesswoman.

Women have the right to work and do with their earnings as they so choose. Men sin just by asking for a penny. Actually, they sin by asking the woman to work to support the family, too, so her earnings are for fun.

Women are told to get the highest education possible, and if you look in the Quran, it's obligatory (a must) for all men and women.

You must live in the country. Where I live, in the city of Milwaukee, women go out shopping all of the time. Heck, half of the time our husbands don't even know where we are. When they get off of work, they call to make sure we're safe, but that's about it. THey also don't complain about the money we spend because we're not buying stupid stuff that we don't really need or want.

Women receive guests all of the time. My sister in law always has people visiting her, and I throw dinner parties often.

And those countries you speak of are following culture. Look in the Quran and Hadith and you'll see that you are wrong. It's not even the woman's duty to cook and clean if she doesn't want to. It's not even her duty to raise or nurse the children. And if she does, the men are not allowed to complain

Don't take the screwed up culture over there and say it's Islam. They even use the verse of four witnesses for rape, when that verse is about a man accusing his wife of adultery. The hadiths say in the case of rape, the woman is a victim and is not to blame, and the man is to be stoned to death. Man, do you research first.

I believe that women were considered the lesser because life was about survival only! There were not rights, there were no freedoms, it was about eat or be eaten. Men were stronger physically and the women had to give birth and take care of the children, so men went out and got food, protected the family and made sure everything else got done. They are still stuck in that time and place!!!!
