You need to get your dog some exercise in the morning before you leave for work so it's totally exhausted and it's anxiousness is at it's minimum while tired and (of course!) sleeping.
After doing the exercises begin to go out and leave for 5 minute increments and return. DO NOT pay attention to the puppy. Do your normal things, take keys out, put wallet in bedroom, go potty do not engage in any type of play or interaction. Leave again, do this is steadily longer increments (time being gone). Get pup used to you being gone and not expecting gratification. When you hear the barking, etc ignore it during that period. If you live in an apartment building, be kind let your neighbors know what your doing so they understand and know that in the long run this is for the best.
Continue to use the crate as a homey place as other posters have suggested. Put music on as suggested also, to mask outside 'scary' noises which are unknown the the little guy.
Please don't physically muzzle the little guy if that's what your considering, you'll create more anxiety and insecurity issues.

a fan on low a radio on a channel like jazz or classical music on just low enough where you can walk out the door and not hear the radio going. Dogs have better hearing than us and a radio on sounds louder to then than to us. These options always help my dogs...I do both of these, but it is best to turn the fan off if the weather turns cold as you don't want to give your puppy a cold.

Dogs find much comfort in a "crate" (I think it goes back to wolves in caves). Make sure the crate is large enough for your growing puppy. Also, make sure that when you're with your pup, you give it lots of love, attention, and playtime. Throw in an old t-shirt or something (not washed) with your scent on it for comfort. Also, a rawhide chew toy, or one of those red rubber toys that you can fill with peanut butter or something to occupy the dog while your away! Be kind and patient! Enjoy your new puppy!

LOTS of toys & chewy bones!! Turn on a radio or TV. Give her/him an old shirt of yours (NOT washed), so they can smell and 'cuddle' you till you get home.
If all else fails, there is a bark collar -- don't get the one that shocks!! That is cruel.

Put him in a cage not much bigger than he is. He'll be safe, no water or food and take him out when you get home, soon he'll get used to it, I say ;night night; and my dogs go to bed. Sometimes when we stay up and watch a movie, they go to bed without us telling them. We have 4. We had a wolf but she died after 10 wonderful years.
