Well you got a bunch of good answers, some funny. I don't know if Sony makes the best, but I own a Sony and love it. It's Sony CyberShot DSC-H2. Has 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom, image stabilizer, makes excellent 8X10s when enlarged, very good on batteries, comes with batteries and charger. And it does take a memory STICK!

Unfortunately you can use sony memory stick for sony digital cameras only!
Go for sony.. Sony is BEST. try to buy a camera with big optical zoom (NOT digital zoom) and more pixel ( 5 or more)

given how the cost of memory has come down... be careful that you don't go and spend $100 more on a Sony Camera (versus, perhaps, a more capable Fuji or Panasonic), just so that you don't need to spend $30 on a new SD card.

Sony does make excellent cameras... but you do seem to pay a little extra for the name.
