Hey Ria,
All those answers and not one site given to you. LDS Family Search is the first best place to look. Then SSA. Here are some places. The advice to go to the local records is good, they are usually online - Search YAHOO for "Vital Record " where location is your county, city, etc municipal record keeping level. That will give you a site to go to, follow their directions. Cemeteries and Obituaries can also help. Below are some generic sites, Do the Search I recommended - or go to your town hall.

The County Clerk in the county where the person died will have the death certificate. If you know the funeral home that handled the burial, they'll also have a copy of the death certificate.
If the person died after 1965 and had a Social Security number they may be in the Social Security Death Index. Not everyone who died is in there (my own mother isn't), but it's awefully comprehensive.
The other place to go is to the library in the town where the person lived and pull the obituary from the old newspaper films.

I think your question needs a little bit more info. If you are trying to find out HOW someone died, maybe the local newspaper covered it and you can search through their archives for more information. If you want someone's death certificate or dates of death and location, try "familysearch.org". The death must have occured over a year ago though.

Contact the Department of Public Records in the State in which the death ocurred.
They should be able to provide a copy of the death certificate.

Social Securtiy Death Index will handle most U.S. deaths from 20th century. Ancestry.com is a good place to get access to that database. Also, you can access each and every state department of vital statistics to search their respective records. Some places may have a fee attached to them.
