You have a few choices.
You can either work with free weights instead (which you can tailor to your strength)
You can begin with kneeling pushups (instead of lifting your entire body off the ground, your knees remain on the ground).
Or you can elevate your hands (so you start at an angle, with your head at a higher elevation than your feet) to make it easier.
No matter what you choose, you have to work at it, and make the exercise a little harder each week to show real progress.

Start out doing pushup position on your knees and gradually work your way up. Even if you can only do 1, the strength will eventually get there. It just takes practice.
Even doing chest presses with low weights (5lb dumbells) until failure will help you build up to full fledged pushups.

a good way to start building muscle is to lift cans or small weights
to do pushups- try it with your knees bent so instead of being on your toes and hands, go on you kness and hands. go slowly. or you can lead against the wall or counter on your toes and push up. another good way is to sit on a chair, put you hands on the chair next to your hips and slowly move your butt forward off the chair and slowly raise and lower yourself. these are called dips and will build strength in your triceps. (back of your arms)

Start small. If you are really wanting to do push-ups, just train yoruself to do a small amount. For example, set a goal of three push-ups and do two sets per day five days per week. Keep at it until you feel them getting easy. Then increase your number. Make your next stop five push ups at a time...master those, move to seven, etc.
I used to hate doing push ups b/c I was not good at them, but they are an amazing workout of lots of muscles in your bod - not just your arms, chest and shoulders. I kept practicing mine and I'm now able to do three sets of 25 on one foot! :-)
It can work...you just have to start somewhere and keep plugging away. Good luck!

you need to do bench presses. If you dont want to do that.. start out with cheats. Put your knees on the floor and do them until you gain strength. work up slowly until you can do a few... dont give up and good luck

I NEVER could do a single push-up before.
But now, I can do... LOTS!
This is how I did it, everyday, I force myself to do one push-up at least. Then, as time passes by, you would find yourself doing loads from daily practicing. Point is, you have to PUSH THE LIMIT!
For you, I suggest doing push-ups on your knees instead of your toes for starters.
