cycling clothes are designed for better comfort and performance when riding...

I wouldn't wear jeans when riding my road bike because they would be too warm, the pant legs could tangle up in the chain, and they would probably lead to chaffing

you can wear whatever you want, but you will enjoy riding more if you are prepared with the proper equipment, which includes clothing

Of course you don't have to wear cycling specific clothes, but you'll find they are quite useful.

If you're going to be on the bike for long periods of time (2 hrs or more) frequently I would recommend a pair of cycling shorts with a pad- they are awesome. You can always just wear these under a normal pair of shorts if you don't want to sport the spandex look.

It is not necessary to wear cycling clothes except the foot gear should protect your feet from injury and the clothes should be open weave to let air circulate in the heat of day, and nothing should interfere at the bottom of your leg to catch in the pedals or wheels .... that would be disaster. But, they do not need to be special clothes .... one may wear everyday shorts and cotton shirts that absorb some moisture .. and helmet would be good if you are in the city in traffic or if you are going a long distance ...

No, you don't need to wear them. some clothes makes sense, some don't, depend on how much time you spend cycling, what you do and what you like.

I like to use a sports t-shirt (some fabric that keeps sweat from sticking to you body), use some swimming trunks (yep, I could literaly jump from the bike to the pool... well, maybe not pool, I would dirty it up, but maybe a lake), cycling socks (they're short and breathe well) and cycling shoes (I use clipless pedals, so I need them).

I think that you are cooler if you don't

I love riding a bike that is better than everyone else's and passing them on the trail all while wearing jeans.

Save the fancy jerseys and stuff for the real racers, don't pretend
