1) Mormons (Latter-day Saints) are Christians. It's obvious in the name of the church: The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints.
2) In the Book of Mormon, which is just another testament of Jesus Christ, a book called Alma chapter 34 verse 9 it states,"For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be made." Of course they believe in the atonement! Ask any Mormon.
3) Again. Religion is based on Christ. Oh, could that be a Christian????? <:O

Obviousness answers your question in simplicity:
1. Do they believe in the Atonement of Jesus Christ? - Go to http://www.lds.org. They have a search bar there. Search for the word 'atonement' and see how many hits on that web site you get.
2. What is their religion based on? - The name of the church is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The name says it all.
Granted their beliefs are rather unorthodox, by the fruits of their labors, they are more Christian than many other Christian groups.

Yes, Mormons are most definitely Christians.
They believe in the Bible. They believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. They believe that Jesus Christ suffered for our sins in Gethsemane for our sins, and died on the cross, overcoming death, that all men might be resurrected some day.
The official name of the church is not "mormon" but:
"The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"
Some Christian churches try to define Christianity in a way that excludes those that they don't like. They go to great efforts to try to keep their club exclusive. However, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone to tell you that someone that maintained the beliefs above was not christian.
So, here's the 411 on Mormons.
1. They believe in the bible - old and new testament
2. They believe that Christ is the savior of the world.
3. They believe that God used prophets in the past to reveal his word to his people, and that he continues to do so.
4. They believe that Jesus Christ restored his church to the earth through a modern prophet, Joseph Smith.
5. They believe that Joseph Smith was guided to an ancient text of scripture that was written by prophets who lived in the Americas and that this book of scripture works hand in hand with the bible to testify of Jesus Christ and his Gospel.
They tend to get criticized from other Christian churches because they claim that their church was founded by christ and is the only church containing all truth today. While others teach incomplete or incorrect doctrines.
Further they invite those who seek truth to read the book of Mormon, and pray to got if it is true, believing that God will reveal his truth to those who humbly and sincerely seek it.
They will send you a book of mormon for free if you want one by calling 1-888-537-7111 and/or you can have missionaries come to your home and answer any questions that you have.

Gordon B. Hinckley, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said:
"We are Christians in a very real sense and that is coming to be more and more widely recognized. Once upon a time people everywhere said we are not Christians. They have come to recognize that we are, and that we have a very vital and dynamic religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ."
"We, of course, accept Jesus Christ as our Leader, our King, our Savior...the dominant figure in the history of the world, the only perfect Man who ever walked the earth, the living Son of the living God. He is our Savior and our Redeemer through whose atoning sacrifice has come the opportunity of eternal life."
"Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pray and worship in the name of Jesus Christ. He is the center of our faith and the head of our Church. The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ and witnesses of His divinity, His life, and His Atonement."

Yes, we consider ourselves Christians. Yes, we believe in the Atonement of Jesus Christ - we depend on it. Our beliefs and teachings are based from five books we consider scripture. They are the Old Testement, the New Testement, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. The real name of our church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mormon is just a nickname given to us a long time ago.
I'll include a link to our Articles of Faith. When I was looking into the church I found them very helpful in giving me an overview of the basic beliefs of the church.

Yes. The atonement is central to their faith; their church is based upon the teachings of Christ found in the Bible and upon revelations from God (as done in the Old Testament).

We accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord
He is the son of God the Eternal Father.
Jesus Christ is Jehovah, the God of Abraham and Isaac in the old testament
Man can return to Heaven only through Christ.
We take sacrament each Sunday to remember the Baptism Covenant we made with Christ.
Now, others may say we are not Christians,
I will let you make that judgement.

Their religion is based on two things, the Bible, and The Book of Mormon, which is their version of Jesus' visits to the Americas.
