On February 2nd, I received a notice that I was going to be audited for 2005. I used HR Block Tax Cut. I wanted to use my worry free audit support. After talking to multiple people who couldn't help me, calling numbers that didn't work, and getting the run around...I still haven't talked to a single person about my audit. They take the same info when I call, give me the same mystery numbers, for the same people who don't exist. I can't tell you how frustrated I am. My audit is next week. What do you recommend I do, other than try to inform as many people as possible that this "feature" doesn't work. I have been lied to and am ticked off! Help

Laura, Call the Taxpayer Advocate Service Case Intake Line: 1-877-777-4778 or TTY/TTD: 1-800-829-4059.
Tell them about your audit letter, and that you paid for worry free audit support with H&R Block Tax Cut. You may not be eligible for their help, but they can send you in the right directions. Be sure you get the I.D. #'s and name of the person helping you at any given time. Also, all the information regarding your tax payer accounts will be helpful.

good luck & bless

Are you sure this is a true audit. I have received letters from the IRS before where they calculated that I owed more tax and gave me a person's name and number to call at the IRS to discuss, etc. I wrote a detailed explanation of my answer and successfully defended my position and that was the end of it. That is not an audit. An audit is more about you having to prove things with receipts and other documentation and involves face to face meetings. If you have an audit, the first meeting may clear up any confusion. Be careful not to give the agent anything that isn't already on the return.

Did the lRS letter actually say "AUDIT"?? More often than not, they just need some additional information from you.

Unless you have done something to evade tax with willful intent, I think you will be okay. But just in case, do you know any CPAs or EA(enrolled agent)s that you can attain service from? Sure, they might cost a bit (EA is usually cheaper as EA only deals with tax, as opposed to CPA dealing with other specialized areas).

If I were you, I would contact the assigned agent and tell him that you want to re-schedule as you are seeking CPA /EA's service. They usually agree. This phone call is the earlier the better. Then, you can check local papers/websites and find some CPAs or EAs, and check them against BBB and State society of CPA or something like that, just to make sure you are not getting a bad apple.

If the IRS agent refuses the extension or re-schedule, just bring ONLY WHAT YOU NEED. DO NOT BRING A WHOLE BOX of tax info as this would give agent more to look possible miscalculations.

It is a bit unnerving, but it will be okay.

P.S. Unless your tax return is extremely complicated with many statements and treaties, you do not need a tax lawyer! Good luck!
