I think what you're trying to ask is if the narcotic detector dogs are given drugs, therefore making them addicted and wanting to find more. That is a common misconception and the answer is a resounding NO. As a matter of fact, the dogs have no concept of narcotics and extreme care must be taken at all times to make sure the dogs never have actual contact with the substances, as they can OD just like a person.
A good prospect for a narcotic detector dog must have an insatiable retrieve drive. To train a dog to find a specific odor, we scent the dog's favorite toy (ball, towel...etc) with the odor we want the dog to learn to find. Then we play fetch games with the dog using that scented toy. Within a very short time, the dog recognizes his toy as having a specific odor. Expanding on that fact, we teach the dog to scratch or sit when he smells that odor, and we play hide-and-seek games with the dog and his toy in different environments. Then in a live search, when he detects the odor of his "toy" he sits or scratches to tell the handler that the odor of his toy is present. The dog has no concept that the particular odor may be that of a controlled substance, explosive, cadaver, accelerant...etc. It's all a game of fetch to the dog. This is a very condensed version, but you get the idea.

Of course we do... it's far more entertaining to watch a dog sniff drugs than a cop sniff drugs. Dogs become all happy and trippy; cops just get paranoid and want to pick fights.
And it's much easier to train the dog to do it. With cats, you have to hold their little snouts and blow the smoke right into their noses. Birds usually just keel over (no constitution whatsoever.)

If the police use dogs to sniff drugs - then I'm sure the dogs are spaced out and happy even if they're crap at their job!

just because they snort cocaine doesn't mean you have a right to stop your canine friend from doing the same. However, I think it is a lame excuse to allow a dog to sniff it on duty and say it is working on a lead!

Are you breathing? Check real quick........
Dogs sniff FOR drugs, the odor the drugs emit that we cannot smell. They do not sniff THE drugs.......
Were you still breathing? Good, I am so happy.
