I'm not sure what type of tree it is. It is almost completely red - the trunk and branches.

When a tree has lost the bark around its trunk, it's dying or dead. Around here, there are fungus infections, and beetles, that can kill a tree. I am sorry for your loss.

May I suggest posting a photo of the tree? It might give people answering a better idea of the problem? Alternatively, take a photo to your local knowledgeable nursery (NOT Home Depot or anything like that). Nobody wants trees dying... Good luck!

PS Some trees like Madrone, do that normally...

Relax.. it is the type of tree that you have. I think you have a Pacific Madrone
