I'm looking for weird, wacky, or interesting people, places, or events for an offbeat news show. Does anyone have any suggestions for anything like that in Georgia? Especially near Atlanta. Thanks!

Try Dahlonega - The first gold rush in the US was in that area and there was an operating US Mint in the mid 1800's.
Helen - Where there's an entire alpine village that looks like it was transplanted from europe. Hot Air Balloon races, etc.
Brasstown Bald - Highest point in Georgia. On a clear day you can see Atlanta from the North Carolina line.
The Wren's Nest - Home of Joel Chandler Harris (author of the Uncle Remus Tales)

If you are looking for the strange, you might consider the Clermont Lounge, the oldest strip club in Atlanta. It is often rated in the top-ten (not on the family friendly list) of things to see in Atlanta.

The Varsity is kind of quirky if only for being the largest drive-in (or some award) but the food is nothing to write home about.

Visit Providence Canyon State Park in Stewart County, which is south of Columbus. It is called "Georgia's Little Grand Canyon." You can go to the coast and visit the historic district in St. Marys. It is small, but historic. It is the gateway to Cumberland Island and has the Kings Bay Submarine Base nearby.

Check out Helen, GA. Great white water rafting. Takes maybe a complete day to see it. Town is replica of a German town.

I've had several friends tell me Underground Atlanta is cool. Also, check out Varsity Drive-In. It's HUGE! And they have good food.
