I am promised a lot of money for each pup when they r born.
But there are strays around which can ruin my suggested business opportunity. Is it a cruel thing to do to sterilize pets?

Absolutely go ahead and spay her. It is in no way cruel.

As far as the "business opportunity" goes, first of all basset hounds often need c-sections ($$$$$$$), usually in the middle of the night so there's an emergency fee on top of that. Also, basset hounds have a tendency to lie on their puppies, so if you aren't able to watch them around the clock you WILL lose some to being crushed by their mother.

Yes, you should have your Basset spayed. And, no, it is not a cruel thing to do. Actually, spaying an animal can in the long run avoid many health problems, including cancer and payometria. Also, breeding a dog takes more than just putting two dogs of the same breed together and waiting for puppies. It may sound like you will make money, but being responsible about the breeding means spending money on care. Some breeds of dogs, like Basset Hounds, have health problems that you need to breed out, and can even require C-sections to deliver the puppies. It is a huge responsiblity that shouldn't be taken on as a sure way to make money, because it isn't (remember what they say about counting chicks).

If you were a good breeder then you honestly would not make money because you would be spending it on shots and care of the mother during the whole thing. Honestly, we adopted our first dog from a Basset Hound Rescue (www.bbrescue.org) and there are sooooo many loving animals out there that need homes I would hope you would fix your animal. Our Basset Hound was fixed at the age of 7, and he is FINE!!!! No problems whatsoever. Vets make sure that they are as comfortable as possible. Do not be afraid. I would applaud your decision to fix your animal rather than thinking a dog is a big dollar sign.

It is certainly not cruel! It will prevent her having unwanted puppies, and has the advantage of helping to prevent certain types of cancer. She will be coming into heat any time now, so have her spayed right away. She is far too young to breed in any case.

You also won't have to deal with the mess during her heat, nor the unwanted males hanging around. As far as a business opportunity, any good breeder can tell you that they often make nothing at all from a litter, by the time all the vet expenses, extra food etc are figured in. You also take the risk of losing both her and the puppies if she has a difficult birth.

It is not cruel to sterilize pets. Every pet should be sterilized unless they are champion pedigrees to be used for breeding purposes, but that is up to the sole discretion of the pet owner. My vet told me that a dog can be sterilized at 5 months of age but no sooner. The vet also said that not only the age of the dog, but the weight of the dog is taken into consideration when a dog is to be spayed (female) or neutered (male). It is best to see your vet. Also, do not delay too long in deciding if your pet should be spayed because if you wait a long time to spay her, then the older she gets after spaying, the more likelihood of weight gain. If you are going to spay your female dog, it is best done early at the advice of your vet.

Also keep in mind that Bassets are dogs with a lot of health problems, and the pregnancy might be quite complicated, with a great likelihood of a c section. Also, puppies (IF they are 'purebred enough', and IF the puppies survive birth, and IF you get a litter bigger than a pup or two) are expensive to care for, vet checks, deworming and registering. Considering the fact that you are also endangering your own dog and that you don't strike me as the most experienced dog owner/breeder, I suggest you spay your animal. It will drastically reduce her chances of getting various cancers and unwanted litters by the neighborhood dogs. Just enjoy her awesome company :)
good luck, -c

If you have Pedigree papers on her she is a good quality dog that has championships in her back ground. If you do not have Pedigree papers on her she is pet quality and it is best to spay/neuter any pet quality dog.

Pet quality dogs are just that pet quality. They are not breed able due to the messed up genetics's that are nothing but a pool of genes that are faults or predispositions for future health issues, conformation, temperament, color etc.

By all means, if she does not meet the standards of the breed spay her. She will be healthier in the long run.

I don't think it is cruel at all to fix an animal. One it controls the unwanted animals and thus would result in less animals in the shelters and being put down. Also, female dogs that are never bred will sometimes form something similar to human endometriosis which is painful and then they have to be fixed anyway. So, instead of it looking at it as a lost business venture you will have a healthy happy pet.

Yes, you can make alot of money..but is it ethical?
firstly, it is safer for your precious dog...unaltered female dogs can get overian and breast cancer...it is very common.
female dogs can run away...and mate and concieve from every male dog on the street...
do you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that those pups wont end up tied in the yard, ignored, euthanised, in the pound, abused, neglected?
Animals are not cars or jewelry to be made money off of, they are living breathing creatures with feelings and a soul that need love, constant care, excercise, food, kindness. They are not the bottom line.
Also, anyone who breeds dogs professionally will tell you, with all the vet care, things that can go wrong, food, etc...you seldom to never make any money off of the pups.

Spay your dog. Unless you're showing her and expect to breed champion pups - spay her.

Better yet, look at why you have the dog in the first place. If you regard your dog as a money-making opportunity - re-home her and get a "real" job.
