Hi Bugs,
Golden rule, all food is edible but for the appetite it has to look
and smell good, with a bit of creative garnishing skills there is
no reason why you can not try with what ingredients you have
at hand, imagination is a wonderful thing.
Good luck, if you get any compliments for any lets all hear about
them .......... spread the word
Regards.......

Believe it or not there are some cooks that have to cook using recipes that is what recipes books are used for, but there are cooks out there that look at a recipe and cook without measuring and it turns out just as well if not better.
Cooks that don't believe in recipes are general the ones that will take a recipe and see what ingredients can be put into it to make it even better.

I throw things together. I can usually try something once and then just know how to make it by the ingredients that I taste. Its not a fool proof way but I'm right 9 out of 10. I use recipes for baking and things that need specific measurements.

Both...

For baking (cakes, cookies, etc.) I follow the recipe.

For cooking, some meals I just throw together (i.e., spaghetti sauce), others I have a recipe. I always follow the recipe the first time I make something and then make notes in the margin for how to make it better.

It depends, a lot of times I just throw stuff together. It usually works out. LOL. Even when I do use recipes I might make some modifications of my own.

Mostly I cook by throwing things together but when I come across a recipe I want to try, I'll make it the way it states the first time but then make notes on things I may want to try differently.

Both. Normally I can figure out how to tweak recipes to my own liking. But tonight I'm making something I've never made before, so I'm following the recipe to the letter...almost (it needs garlic). After that, I'll generally follow it but with improvements. Then there are the days when I look in the pantry and just make something up and hope it turns out.

A little of both, I guess. The recipes I learned from family members, I don't use a recipe at all. But even when I am cooking with a new recipe, I add or delete items according to what I have onhand or our personal tastes

I almost always throw something together for lunch and dinner. Its easier for me this way. I come home see whats in the fridge and pull something together.
I do use recipes but only on certain occassions when I see something I really like.

Actually, I do both. When I've cooked something for a long time, I generally have the recipe downpact and can do it on my own. And, once I've done that, then I can improvise! Sometimes I'll look in the pantry and fridge and think, what would taste good? And then I go about creating it!
