OK, so I admit this is based on light reading and first appearances, but although always thought satanists were either twisted charlie manson esque psycopaths (he wasnt one incidently) or attention seeking teenagers. However after doing a bit of reading, they dont seem half as batty as I thought.
Has anyone else actually read this stuff? What do they think?
Its odd, they dont believe in God OR the devil, per say, instead that as all gods are of human creation, worshipping an external god is to worship another human by proxy; therefore, the sensible, Satanic approach is to create your own god, namely yourself, and worship this god. This does not mean self abuse either.
I am not a satanist, and I dont intend to become one either, but its an interesting perspective and certainly food for thought.
I will include some quotes afterwards, but my source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satanic_Bible - take a look with a mind free of preconception and like me you might be surprised

A few choice quotes:
"LaVey makes it very clear that although Satanism is an uncompromisingly selfish religion, he defines selfishness according to what an individual truly wants. Therefore, if a person should honestly care for another person and wishes to express love, then he should do so wholeheartedly"
"Satanism encourages any form of sexual expression you may desire, so long as it hurts no one else. This does not preclude sexual masochism, as "so long as it hurts no one else" must be interpreted to mean "who does not wish to be hurt" "

i've read only lightly on it aswell and feel the same as you do. it's really interesting and makes a lot of sense. but a lot of other people find it really difficult to open their minds to it.perhaps because the word "satan" is embedded in you from such a young age to be the worst thing possible... but if you can free yourself from such stigma it's worth investigating.
i don't know if i believe in a god or deity. but i do believe, regardless of religious persuasion, people should take more responsibility for their actions. satanism encourages this. in being your own god you acknowledge that you are responsible for all your own life choices and cannot pass the buck when it's convenient. "satan made me do it", my fat a5s he did... in satanism the biggest crime is being ignorant. we all have the opportunity and responsibility to educate ourselves.
sadly, however, it's easy to associate satanism with goths. through following satanism goths are often elitist and aloof. but just because they're like that it doesn't mean everyone has to be like that.
i believe marilyn munroe was a satanist. and marilyn manson is also. you should read his autobiography. that's what got me interested.

I've actually read the Satanic Bible and this is accurate. I would not call it a very advanced religion, but it is very practical for people who feel stifled under the burden of artificial structure.
My understanding is that it's called 'Satanism' as a sort of way of thumbing one's nose at Christianity and all it culturally and socially clamps down on. It actually has little to do with Satan, except as a symbol of rebellion and hedonism.
I prefer paganism myself.

I think there's something good there. It has a refreshingly honest view of life, it's brutally realistic, it doesn't promise things it can't deliver. It's proud, intelligent, and bettering -- if done correctly. Unfortunately, it suffers from two primary flaws: individuality can be taken to the extreme of anti-socialness, and its own over-inflated ego. Satanism is convinced that everyone should be completely independent; it ignores that we are social animals and live in a social environment (whether we want to or not).

Satan is just very misunderstood. He is not as bad as God's onesided propaganda makes him out to be. We should give him a chance. More like "Come in me old mate, sit yourself down and have a cup of tea" not "Get behind me Prince of lies!" Have some compassion for him, the poor wee lamb.

Satanism refers to ANYONE who denies the one true God, and looks to themselves for understanding and wisdom, or to other beliefs and religions. Satanists just happen to call themselves what they are, while others deceive themselves into thinking they are different.
The reason you feel Satanism is not "unreasonable", is because their beliefs are similar to those who practice wicca, pantheism, new age philosophies, buddhism, and tons of other man made beliefs. Satanists do not believe in a literal Satan, God, heaven, hell, etc. They believe in self, human ambition, attraction of desires, and enjoyment here on earth without God. Sound familiar?
The media has played up the child sacrificing and other disturbing images, so that others will feel their religions or beliefs are different from "Satanism". Yes there are groups which engage in these things, but most Satanists do not. This is a lie spread by Satan to confuse people, and it's working wonderfully.
Satan takes many forms to deceive different people. If he appeared as he truly is, MOST people would not willingly follow him. Also, revealing his true nature, would mean one would also have to acknowledge there is a God as well, and he most certainly wouldn't want that to happen. He's very clever.
The common factor for those who are involved in Satanism, is denial of the one true God, that Jesus is Lord and Savior, and that the Holy Spirit is real. If you deny these three things, you are involved in Satanism, regardless of what you call it. There are only two paths: one which leads to Satan, and one which leads to the true God and creator of all. That's it in a nutshell.
Many people are being deceived, while Satan rolls over in laughter at how gullible people continue to be. When you deny God, and choose Atheism, other religions, beliefs, practices, etc, you have made a deal with Satan and chosen his side.

It is a fine line between the truth and untruth. If it was easy we will all belong to the same faith. seems you have fallen for that category

I don't find it odd that people do not believe in god.
What I find weird is that people do believe in god.
You will find life a lot simpler when it dawns on you that there is no god.
Welcome and
good luck mate.
PS.. there is no devil either.
All man made fiction for ulterior motives.
