Only better, because you don't actually have to show people the carrot, or the stick?

Is it all just some primitive tool to keep the unwashed masses in line?

Well, I guess if you're an atheist it appears that way. Traditionally they have been used that way through the centuries. But that doesn't mean it's theologically correct.

My view as a Christian is, needless to say, different. Heaven exists because we get a chance to commune with God after death. Hell exists because there are people who choose to turn away from God and you can't have a choice unless there is an option. (Hell is to be out of God's presence, no burning lakes of sulfur). Sorry if I got a little preachy there, just trying to explain my view of it.

Hmm. I guess you can say that.

I always figured it was like a policing tool. An invisible Department of Justice with invisible police an invisible court and an invisible prison. That is the purpose of unmarked squad cars. You never know if you're being watched so you behave at all times.

It is, bluntly, a leash to keep people in line. Because Christianity views people as being naturally wrong and dirty, and sees them as needing constant guidance to keep them on the "straight and narrow" -- guidance provided by either a church or a book, and always at the sacrifice of individuality.
