The V6 is used in the Grand Caravan. The reason for dropping the I6 was emissions. Chrysler had problem getting the 4.0 to meet emission standards. What a shame, I own 2 and these are one of the most reliable engines that I know of. Both of mine have over 140,000 miles and show no signs of stopping. Maybe another reason for dropping the 4.0 I6, they last to long.

They replaced it because of fuel economy, emissions standards and because the molds to form the blocks were getting old and worn out. Although, you can still find the 4.0 I6 in China in XJs and Wranglers...I'm sure you'd be able to buy one new from them for cheap.

Listen to oletshot, they switched strictly for emmissions reasons. The inline 6 was easier to work on, and argueably more reliable. It however isn't very enviromentally friendly, and doesn't get the best of gas mileage.

The I-6 was old, and hard to work on, in several ways. Also, fuel economy was not too great, and they already had a good 3.8, which came from their minivans-look under the hood...everything is right in front of you, and can be accessed quite easily, unlike on the old inline. I think it was a good (temporary) move, and will (itself, IMO) be replaced by the new 4.0 [v-6]; probably in 2008.
