Not necessarily-a 5.56 NATO, is not the same as a .223, and to use 5.56 in a .223-only rifle can be a VERY dangerous thing! [think exploding gun] A rifle marked for 5.56 NATO will fire .223 fine, but not always the other way around...

The AR-15 is a semiautomatic version of the M-16. Even the part inter change so that would be a yes. I've owned both of them.

Its almost the exact same weapon, the only differences are:
AR-15
Bolt is not as strong
Only fires semi automatic
M-16
More robust bolt
Fires 3 round burst in auto mode
Both use the same ammo .223 cal

Technically yes. Military rounds may have a NATO stamp or a color designation and a military round has a bit more powder in it but both will chamber and fire out of either weapon.

For the most part yes. .223 round. There are newer M16 that shoot the newer NATO 5.56MM ( I think thats right )
