I agree; tattoos don't have to look like crap in 20+years.
Sure there are some things you can't help: weight gain/loss which could stretch out and deform the tattoo, and skin will wrinkle even if its just a little but you can get touch ups on your ink, you can avoid too much sun exposure and you can take care of your skin so that they don't look bad.
Of course getting them done by a professional with good quality ink and tools in the first place helps a great deal as well.
I've seen some older men and women who's ink looks great after 20, 30 and even 40 years. All it usually needs it a touch up and some tender loving care :D

Taking care of your skin and body play a big part in that I think. Keep your skin hydrated and use sunblock. Cancer tans will make your tattoo look faded, blotchy, nasty. =P
Gaining a bunch of weight can stretch out a tattoo depending on where it is, again having hydrated healthy skin will help your skin to handle that better. So don't gain a ton of weight, take care of yourself.
Drink lots of water and avoid cancer tans. Use sunblock. Move off the couch and get some exercise.
I think the tattoos that don't age well are usually the ones that got way too much sun over the years, never got much sunblock, and their skin overall wasn't so healthy. OR it's the tattoo they got at some crummy place that did a bad job on it to begin with and that doesn't help either.
I recommend find a real tattoo artist you like that does a great job, it IS TOTALLY worth the extra money, and take care of your tattoo for the rest of your life, don't just take care of it til it's done healing. Keep that skin happy.

My newest tattoo was done in 1987. It still looks good. The oldest was done in 1984. The yellow has faded out, but the rest looks good.
