Sure they are. Mine is in my lap right now :)
Jacks are great dogs and a lot of fun, though they can be bullheaded at times due to their intelligence and energy. Mine loves to be in my lap and to be constantly touched (we are his fourth house he has been in before he turned 4mos old).
*edit*
As mentioned above, just make sure you give them lots of exercise and play toys/play time. They really need the attention to keep them out of destructive behavior.

Hi there,
to be honest first of all I would have answer the question with a definitely No. But we've got a Jack Russel/Fox Terrier and she is really both. She is a hunting dog as well as a lap dog. Someone already said that they are very hyper and very quick bored. So make sure in case that you get a Jack Russel that the dog have its regularly walks and exercises.
I hope this answer helps you to decide

I'd think so, at least our Jack believes she fits nicely on a lap. However, she is an odd one because she isn't one of these hyper, chew up everything Russell's ... the only thing she loves to destroy are tennis balls which we buy specifically for her amusement. She's a cuddler so I guess, from what others say, we're pretty lucky to have a Jack like her.
Jacks do need patient training and repetitive reinforcement of how to conduct themselves tho in order to be a well behaved member of any family. Possessiveness is a very strong trait in them, ours is possessive of all the women in the house, but perhaps that comes from her time with an abusive family before we rescued her.

I wouldn't consider them to be lap dogs. My jack russell is always moving or running around. They will cuddle up next to you but only after they are extremely exhausted. During the day, its hard even to get her to sit still to pet her...they are much more interested in playing than sitting and be petted. They are very independent/fearless yet at the same time they will follow you everywhere you go because they are soo soo curious and don't want to be left out of anything. They are great dogs if you provide them with the exercise/play/socialization/training that they need.

Absolutely not! Jack Russell terriers are born to run, chase and play. They are very hyper and need serious training and socialization at an early age. Terriers in general are not good choices for those who want a lap dog. Although Yorkshire Terriers are very sweet dogs that can find comfort in your lap. Here is an excellent website to help you choose a pure bred pup. http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/ Click on honest dog breed reviews. It is very helpful.

My Jack Russell is 15years old, so I've known her a long time. Even when she was little she would love to cuddle with you on the couch, granted they are insanely hyper dogs that do need a log of excersice, but they will be more than happy just hang out too. If by lap dog you mean a more mellow animal....well then I would go with my current Basset Hound. He LOVES to just hang out with you for endless amounts of time. Just remember to do all of your research before getting an dog. Every breed has their quirks, they just need to match your own!

I would say yes, but only to a true dog lover, Jacks require alot of attention (or at least mine does). She is very hard headed and if she does not get her way, she makes me pay. At the same time, she is very loyal and very, very affectionate and loves to snuggle. Great personality for a "lap dog", just be sure to burn his/her energy before you plan to have them all over you ....

No, they are terriers. Terriers are working dogs (and tend to be a little high-energy, ADD, and nutsy). He may crawl into your lap if given a chance, but my definition of lap dog is something that is a great deal more calm and not likely to jump into your lap while covered in mud and burrs.

Depends on the dog, age, and size.
Most JR's are very hyper-active and don't like to be held (especially if they are young). Sometimes though, you can come across a very calm and relaxed JR (though it is VERY rare). The older the dog, the usually more calm it is.
