You have become a victim of identy theft. At least that's the way you should treat it. File a police report as soon as possible to cover your butt. If someone has a copy of your passport, they are going to something illegal if they already haven't.

Thats not a good sign at all - best thing to do is check your credit report to make sure no one used your personal information.

You may also want to contact the city of Ottawa Police department and advise them of this scam - or they may be able to follow up in researching this fraudulent / bogus company

Good luck

If you have a copy of the original email, I'd say forward it to the RCMP and let them know about this new "suspected" scam.

Next, make sure that you notify your bank and credit card companies that you suspect that you may be a victim of identity theft and that you do not want anyone to make changes to your account information (change of address, credit limit, etc) unless it is confirmed by phoning you at your home phone number or provide some sort of additional information.

Are you sure it's not a restaurant that they are about to buil?

And no they can't really do anything with a copy of your passport, no one is suppose to accept a copy of anything unless it has been notarized, and the original stamp. Maybe you should report this just in case.
