I have a limited budget, about $500, should I get a O/U or semi-auto?

For $500, get a semi-auto - as the other gentleman suggested, a new or used Remington 1100. You will not find a decent over-under, let alone a trap model that can stand the rigors of competition for $500. Parts for an 1100 should something break are plentiful.

The 1100 Trap is a decent gun - 30" vent rib barrel, see if you can get one with Rem-Chokes. For singles and handicap, a TS shell catcher will come in handy to save your shells and not hit the guy next to you with your ejects. Leave the outside of the magazine tube dry (no oil) and you won't have any cycling problems.

When your price range moves up, a Remington 90T (single) and/or Remington 3200 (over/under) are great investments.

Go for a Mossberg 500 12 GA pump. You have a limited budget and this make is about the most versatile out there.

O/U in the $500 range, as others have pointed out, are junk and personally, I've never been real impressed with semi auto shotguns.

Good luck!

I don't trap shoot much, but I love the Remington 1100 semi-auto.

EDIT: if you can't afford an 1100, try a Remington 870 Express pump. You can get one for $270 or so at Wal-Mart and spend the savings on shooting trap and buying ammo. A semi-auto is easier, but nothing wrong with a pump if you are fast enough.

you would be better with a O/U. Check out Mossbergs new O/U they are bringing in from Turkey. They are selling around $500.
so it would fit your buget.

We sell them at Target Masters in California. They look really good and are put together well. Plus you have Mossberg to back it up.

good luck and enjoy your new hobby.

You won't find a O/U for that amount unless it's at a garage sale and non functioning.

You may find a Mossberg or Remington in that price range.
