i come from South Africa been with my b/f for 1 year and will be returning to south africa in the future, now his parents think we should have a joint mortgage even though i have been telling them im going back home...they say i shud consider it to be my share of the rent then when its time to go home, they expect me to just pack my things and go. should i just move out of the house we share and get myself a place to rent so i wont be pressured into getting a mortgage when i dont feel like it?

If he wants to get a mortgage then let him get one, but under no circumstances get a joint one if you don't want to. What is going to happen if he stops paying? you can pay him "rent" every month if you want and then when it's time to go home you are under no obligation.

I don't quite understand your b/f's parents. You are living with your b/f right? not with his parents? If that is the case, they should just butt out. If you are living with your b/f, you should contribute towards the rent/mortgage payment. You don't have to be on the mortgage with your b/f. It will be too much hassle for you and your b/f. You said you are going back to S. Africa in the future, so why headache? If your name is on the mortgage/deed of trust, you have partial responsibility to the house. You can't just pack your bag and leave when it's time to go. It will make things way too difficult. I suggest you to talk to your b/f make some kind of arrangement in rent pay. If that doesn't work, you should definitely move out.

What ever u do dont get involved with getting a joint mortgage. If u are not married that would be a bad mistake. U move he has it all, no way girlfriend. I had my boyfriend cosign on a car with me, I make the payments he gets glory too. We are not together and he has already stolen it once and I could not do a thing about it. I know it not like a home but , just keep ur feeling that u dont like it. As u really won't. Remember u will still be held responsible. His parents huh! It sounds like they are trying to get themselves some place to live when u go back. But thats only my opinion!

Yes! Why in the world would they be pressuring you to do that?

First of your not married and unless you were engaged and about to get married and not moving back to South Africa I wouldn't do it.

What it seems is the parents don't want their kid having to pay for a full mortgage himself.

What if you go back home and he can't make his portion fo the payments and payments become late and ruin your credit?!

You won't know what's going on while you're gone and God for bid something happen but if you guys break up thats a huge messy issue to deal with ecspecially with you being in another country.

If your partner can't understand that then I would move out. And if he can he needs to stand up to his parents and tell them it doesn't make sense since your leaving soon.

Surely this is a question for your b/f to be asking, (if necessary) NOT his parents. What's the point in getting bogged down with a mortgage, if you're here for such a short time?

Don't do anything that you don't feel comfortable doing. Get your own place...

Who are his parents to be telling you what to do?
