two weeks ago my cat went missing. this is a cat that would not have wandered off on purpose. yesterday a woman seen our ad in the newspaper and left us with this extremely frightened and timid cat. this cat looks alot like merlin, my cat, although it has no collar. it has the same markings on its chest and abdomen that merlin had, although these markings are noticeabally whiter. so i'm wondering, and i know this sounds stupid, but can cat's fur turn whiter in times of extreme stress?

I've never heard of that in cats, but I wouldn't rule it completly out Humans hair can turn white in stress, why can't cats?

To help more clearly identify your kitty, I suggest taking it to the vet, and trying to get an age for this cat, and see if it matches up. Also, if your cat had a regular vet, the vet might have achart that he could use to help determine (i.e. is the cat fixed, any health/teeth issues) etc.

Good luck identifying your kitty.

No it cannot and I come from a third generation cat family. She probably gave you a cat that looks very similar to yours but is not the same. I would keep looking for Merlin but along with the other people, I hope that you love this new cat though and imagine it as another lost soul who needs a good home.

My mom once had a Siamese that use to go into this closet where the water heater was, after a while the color of his fur started to look different. Like he his fur had been faded out, kind of washout looking.

This always happened when my mom took him to northern Calif. up to our property, when she stayed in one of our houses where he could get into that closet.

When she'd bring him back to San Diego, Calif. at the end of the summer he looked different, like washed out or faded. After coming home his fur seemed to go back to normal. Maybe it was either the dark or the heat or both, it was the strangest thing I'd ever seen happen.

It would only take a couple of weeks for it to happen. I hope that's what happened to your cat. If it turns out that this is what happened, take your cat and have it micro chipped then you will always know if it's really your cat.

Good luck, your poor kitty. I hope it all works out for the both of you.

I've never heard of a kitty's fur actually changing color like this, unless he ages or perhaps isn't using his nutrition properly. I don't think this new kitty is your Merlin, but he certainly does sound like someone who needs a home!

Same thing happend with my old cat. I don't think it's stress. Though i'm not sure. Ask your vet.

That's weird. I've never heard of that. But please LOVE your cat. It probably had a pretty bad experience. And don't let the cat outside!
