The truth is, your contractor doesn't think its that important to get the book to you.

1. the warranty on your unit is tied to the model and serial number- any HVAC contractor can get the warranty info with this information
2. HVAC contractors deal with emergency situations every day- someone has no heat/ hot water/ AC and your book doesn't constitute an emergency.

Call his office, and leave a message stating that you're highly dissapointed in the fact that he has made getting your replacement book a low priority- tell him that if he doesn't get you the book, you'll find another contractor.
You can contact the manufacturer for a duplicate copy, explain to them what happened and they will send it to you. (this is a common problem among heating contractors, because the installers are usually in a hurry)
I don't want to make excuses for any of them, but you asked-

There is nothing in the manual that you as a homeowner needs to know, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. If the unit is new, which I'm sure it is, the manufacturer warrants it, via any dealer and using any contractor. The installation warranty, usually one year, can be verified by your receipt date. I wouldn't worry about it, if you have any problems I'm sure your contractor will Honor the warranty and if after a year contact the manufacturer.
