I am concerned about why you would want a free dog. If you cannot afford to buy/adopt a dog, then how will you afford to care for and feed the dog? Dogs require a serious commitment of time, money, and effort, so please think about whether getting a dog is something you and your grandmother can really manage.

I suggest looking at this "Are you ready to own a dog?" quiz (1--see link below) from Cesar Millan, a well-known dog trainer. The Humane Society also has a list of questions to consider before adopting a pet (2), as well as an article about older Americans and mature pets (3).

Please note that puppies require a LOT more effort than adult dogs. An adult or senior dog would be a better choice for an older person, but they are not "maintenance free." In addition, a senior dog (and the adult dog as it ages) may require more medical care for "old age" issues.

Does your grandmother want a dog or is this a surprise gift? It is never a good idea to surprise someone with a pet. In addition to the commitment involved with being a pet owner, people often have specific opinions about what kind of pet they want. Assuming your grandmother is ready and willing to have a dog, it's best to include her in the selection process.

Lastly, doing some breed research and talking to a professional (such as vet or trainer) will help you find the best match to your grandmother's personality and needs. Good luck!

I volunteer for a local rescue group in KC area. If you want a healthy dog, up to date on all vaccines and is already spayed or nuetered go to Petfinder.com or got to Petsmart or Petco on weekends. That is where we are holding adoptions. The dog may cost more than you want but in the long run its cheaper becuase you don't have to pay for the spay or nueter or vaccines out of pocket and all we are charging is a break even amount.
Please don't get a puppy if you are wanting it to be for an elderly person. Get an adult dog that is already trained and is not too active.

there's perharbor.com, puppylistings.com, 1800saveapet.com, local online classifides, yahoo classifides, local breed-specific rescues ect. but i'd start with the websites then go thru the classifides because there are a ton of them, and new listings are posted all the time. i've been basically living on my computer for like the past week trying to find an xtra small dog, but i don't show or breed and it's really difficult to find one for adoption locally. mostly your gonna find pups that need to be shipped to you. however there are pet airlines and it's quite safe for the pet. good luck finding one that will be a good fit for you and your home!
also make sure to ask for the sellers approx. location, because i've been finding all these ads that say they're somplace, when really most i've gotten replys from are in cameroon africa. so be aware of that, and i hope i've been helpful.

Try checking the classified ads in your local newspaper. They always have ads for free puppies.
