I had to research travel insurance for my mum about 6 months ago and at the time of looking the companies mentioned below all offered insurance to the over 70s, plus they were Best Buys in the consumer magazine Which? You will have to check whether the companies are available to you in Ireland.

The competitiveness of a company will depend on your specific age, where you are going, and whether you want Single Trip or Annual Insurance. This means that one insurer may be good on Annual policies to Europe, another might be better for single trips to USA or Canada. Also note that cheaper deals may also mean less cover. You may be paying lower premiums with a particular company recommended to you but note the differences in cover, particularly on Medical, Personal Accident and Dental treatment if travelling to North America. For these reasons I recommended Bradford & Bingley even if their excess was higher than some of the others.

If you are an Irish person traveling to a country where they don't have national health I would suggest that you book it. One trip to the ER for a simple sprain or a migraine in the US or Canada could cost you a couple of thousand dollars. (don't even think about something more complicated) You don't need that surprise expense added to your trip.
Trip cancellation insurance- personal choice. How many times have you had to change plans because of you or your families health or emergencies? If it has happened more than once then I'd do it, then like every day magic you will not need it and your trip will go like clock work.

It's difficult enough getting it for 0ver 70's in England - I know cos I was looking for travel insurance for my mum-in-law.
Got it from Egg.com in the end - might be relevant for Ireland too!

Squaremouth is a comparison website that provides hundreds of products with UK and US based sites. If you don't mind paying in US$ then I recommend the US site because that specializes in travel health insurance for any age and any nationality so long as they are traveling outside their home country.

Hi There if ur a member of vhi , travel insurance should be ok they sell some also if u book and pay for trip in full with ur credit card ur also insured for flights, bags, hosp and death just ask ur credit card company
