D 40 is a scaled down model, which you will overgrow soon, even if you are an amateur at the moment. D 50 is a good, full bodied model, has 6.1 mp, accepts SD card and has good color reproduction. Canon Rebel is smaller and lighter (heavy or light - it is personal preference), has almost similar but a shade better color reproduction, has a faster lens and has better features. Among the 3 you mentioned, my list is (i) Canon and (ii) D 50.

I like the Canon XT. If you can swing the extra $, go up to the XTi. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

I don't like the D40 because of lense selection and I think you can do better than the D50 in terms of price for what you're getting. (i.e. you're better off getting an older Canon 300D off of ebay for around $250-400).)

I don't have any experience with the D40 or Rebel, but I am very happy with my D50. I've had it a little over a year, and have yet to have any problems with it.

For an amateur and the price, look at the Canon XT very seriously, 8 MegPix, then there is the XTi which is 10. This will give you clarity when you zoom in or crop on editing that is fantastic. I have both and would recommend them to anyone. Canon is far ahead of the other in technology vs price.

Nikon D50, because the NikonD40's specifiction isn't as good as 50 and the price doesnt change that much.
